What Is Pranayama ?
Pranayama is a practice that teaches you the art of controlling your breath and gaining maximum control over your respiratory system. Pranayama is a compound word derived from Sanskrit, where “Prana” means breath or vital energy, and “Yama” means control or restraint.
Breathing is our vital energy that empowers us to stay alive. It is related to our heart rate, and our body adjusts the way we breathe according to the oxygen needs of our body at any given moment. Pranayama is the practice of becoming aware of how our breath behaves and how we can control it.
The simplest way to see Prana is to consider our lungs as the motors of our body, controlling and sending energy. With the control gained through Pranayama, you will be able to heal physical and mental problems, gain consciousness of your body posture, and enhance the power of your breath. Pranayama teaches us to maximise and control the potential of our body, allowing us to age with good mental and physical health.
Control over the mind is not possible if we don’t control the Prana. The mind and breath are interconnected, and when someone practises Pranayama, their breathing is calm and regulated, whereas someone controlled by their emotions often displays irregular and high-paced breathing patterns. This mutual dependency of the mind and breath emphasises the need to gain control over our breath to control our mind and overall well-being.
The power of prana lies mostly in controlling the way we exhale, as more energy is extracted by taking more time for exhaling than inhaling.
Most people only use a fraction of their lungs and breathe shallowly, leading to negative effects like headaches, bad posture, lack of energy, and even a shorter lifespan. Through Pranayama, we can learn to become conscious of our breathing, expand our ribcage and diaphragm, and extract more vital energy to maintain strength and health.
